Back on the Bike...

Wow... it's been nine months since I've posted a blog. A lot has happened in this time. And no -- I didn't have a baby ;) Where to begin...

1. Divorced after 18 1/2 years of marriage

2. Sent my twins (and last two) to Kindergarten this fall

3. New job that I love (part time grant writer)

4. New home that I love (actually moved twice in two months!)

5. New car that I love (not so big a deal, but still change! :)

It has been quite a ride and the net-net of it all is that I couldn't be happier. I tried to keep up with everyone's blogs while I was absent -- they certainly were a great happy distraction from it all. I had to put my "business" on hold, but hope to get back into creating soon.

Just wanted to say "hi" and that I hope to be reading more blogs, posting more posts, creating new things, and enjoying every single day for the gift that it is.

I've added some more sweaters recently to Etsy and these are two of my favorites. They both feature vintage trims (the cream colored trim came all the way from Belgium). Cardigans are the perfect topper for spring and summer, so take a look and see if you find one you like.

I have been oh so absent. I've been MIA. Somebody put out an APB because I just went missing for three weeks.

Things have been a little "busy" here and I've been very preoccupied -- but more to come on that at a later date.

In the meantime, here are some sweet spring aprons that I just listed on Etsy. All made from vintage sheets. Hope they put a little spring in your day -- we are basking in the low 80's here in Colorado. But spring is such a tease here and we probably have a couple more snow storms to go before we can really pull out the swimwear.

Prints Charming

I neglected to mention in my last post how much I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's look on Oscar night. She looked like a goddess and I think the print is fantastic. Enough Oscar fashion. Until next year... or until my People magazine arrives this Friday.

Dresses!

Oh my how I love the Oscars. I didn't see nearly as many movies this year as I wanted to, and with the Academy adding five more Best Picture Noms, how's a girl supposed to squeeze all that in? But who cares about the flicks -- it's all about the fashion. I personally love this dress Zoe Saldana wore. Then again, traditional just doesn't cut it for me.

I did see "An Education" with Carey Mulligan, and in addition to being a fabulous young actress, her fashion sense is sublime. All award season she has pulled out some amazing and different frocks and this Prada number is no exception. Not sure if I'm digging the heavier shoe tho...

Demi looked gorgeous -- if we could all look like this in our 40's -- I don't care how she got it (surgery, naturally...) she looks amazing.

I'm so glad Sandra Bullock won, because she gives the best acceptance speeches. And her whole look was amazing -- the dress, her sleek hair, bright lips. She looked like a winner.

And finally, SJP -- gotta love her fashion sense. Never safe, never boring. This Chanel dress is so alluring, so different, and perfectly styled with a wristful of bangles and classic hair. Carrie Bradshaw never disappoints.

Spring Fling!

I've been so absent from blogging lately. Some of it has been for "not so fun" reasons.... and some of it is because I have the Spring Fling next weekend! It's an amazing show in Denver and a great way to kick off Spring. I have been putting in some late nights trying to finish up my work, and I have a busy weekend ahead. Another Tablecloth Trick

My latest upcycling project has been hand towels made from tablecloths. Once a permanent fixture in kitchens and dining rooms, it seems that tablecloths have gone by the wayside, along with the popularity of daily ironing.

So to keep these classics still in circulation, I have cut them down to hand towel size, embellished them with various trims (mostly ruffles made from recycled sheets) and made them into something we use everyday (ironing optional).

Bedspread Blankets

Good 'ol chenille bedspreads. Did you have one growing up? Remember if you fell asleep on top of it you'd wake up with the funny marks on your face?

This popcorn chenille spread was rescued from a thrift store and given new life several times over. Combined with some recycled sheets and a duvet cover, I was able to create several little baby blankets. Second chance charm at its sweetest.

Good Bye Alexander

I was so saddened to read that Alexander McQueen passed away today. The rumor is he took his own life, just a week after his mother died. He was such an amazing creative talent in the fashion world, and while a lot of his designs may be thought of as over-the-top and perhaps "unwearable," they were still incredible works of art to admire. Rest in peace...

Feelin' Scrappy

I'm not one for clutter, or keeping things around "just in case"... However, I do make an exception with fabric. I have a hard time getting rid of fabric, even scraps. As a result, I have come up with a few ways to use my "scraps." My latest project is this fabric "pomander".

I cannot take credit for the idea (is there really ever an original idea anymore?!?! Seems like someone has done it already in some shape or form). The sad part is I can't remember where I saw the idea, but I know it was in blogville.

Basically the only supplies you need are:

Lightweight Fabric (these were curtain panels I got at Goodwill for $2)

4" Chinese Lantern

Scissors
Hot Glue

This is a great "watching TV" project. Just cut a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of 2" circles out of any lightweight fabric. Fold a circle in half and secure with glue in the middle. Then fold the circle again into a pie shape, add glue to point and secure to lantern. Repeat over and over and over again until the orb is covered. Like I said, a great project while watching your favorite show (which currently for me is either "Southland" on TNT, "The Good Wife", or "Lost" -- which starts tonight -- and of course -- "Project Runway"). Just don't burn your fingers.

I add a piece of card stock to the center, scented with essential oil, to make it into a decorative pomander, and of course a ribbon to hang it from your favorite spot.

The Magic of White Paint

It was time to put down the needle and thread and pick up a paint brush. I had a few items that were in dire need of a makeover, and a little white paint is my mini "furniture facelift" magic potion-- makes everything look a little crisper.

Found this table at the thrift store and snatched it up in a second. The hard part about painting in January is finding a place to paint. Our basement is "finished", it's too cold and wet outside, so... go to where it is a little less wet and and little less cold -- the garage. Can definitely see the signs of winter in our garage.

Anyhoo, here is the finished product. Nothing too spectacular, but definitely more my style. And definitely more deserving of a warm and dry place.

Wow -- already January 18th, and I think this is my second post of the new year. I guess "Up the number of posts on my blog" was not one of my resolutions. But I hope I am turning over a new leaf as of today, and will not be as absent as I have been of late.

January is one of those months that gets a bad rap -- the whole "coming down" off the holiday season, the weather is nothing to cheer about, and it is sometimes a bleak reminder of all that you need to do and "should do" in the upcoming year.

So in the spirit of positive thinking, I've decided to post some of my favorite things about January:

1. Official time for fresh starts and "do overs"

2. My beautiful twins celebrated their 5th birthday today -- Happy Birthday Bridget and Teddy!

3. My amazing mom also celebrates her birthday this month -- just another good reason for a "girl get-together"

4. Project Runway just started up again -- back in NYC, no less. Yea!

5. THE GOLDEN GLOBES! The kickoff of the Hollywood awards season. And while the lovely January Jones (pictured above) did not win for Best Actress in a TV Drama, her show did. Cheers to "Mad Men"!

This is the third and final installment of Christmas Rhyme Time with Caroline. I've written many others, but ya gotta know when to say when ;) Besides, I still have to get started on 2009's poem!!!

This poem I wrote in 2005 after I had my twins. They're almost five and sooooooo excited this year for Christmas. I'm not sure we are going to make it through the day...

It’s been a different year,
What, with twins and all.
No more “quick stops” at Target
Or long trips to the mall.

With the holidays approaching
I needed a better plan --
I’m not nearly as mobile
With two more kids in our clan.

I tried on-line shopping
A sort of “cyber St. Nick”
All of my gift shopping done
With just a few easy clicks.

JCrew, Amazon
Toys R Us and more!
All of my favorite dot coms
Delivered right to my door.

The postman, the FedEx guy –
They all brought my things.
Everyday was like Christmas
Each time my doorbell would ring.

The mall at my fingertips.
My shopping done in no time.
But the best part of all:
No crowds and no lines.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish
While your little ones take naps.
Who knows – maybe next year?
I’ll even get it gift wrapped.

CHRISTMAS PAST

Christmas of yesterday

Was quite a different story

A husband and a dog

Were my only two worries.

Office gatherings, parties....

What should I wear?!

Jewelry and makeup

And don't forget hair!

Holiday hangovers

From a nip of the nog

And shopping at Petsmart

To get gifts for the dog.

Up late Christmas Eve

Sleeping in Christmas Day

Presents galore!

The VISA I'll pay.

It sounds pretty good

And certainly not a bore

But I started to feel that

I wanted something more...

CHRISTMAS PRESENT

Along came a baby

In March of '01

Who made the holidays more special

Christmas Time Rhyme

Every year (well, most every year;) I write a little holiday poem for my family. Writing has always been my first love and this is just a way for me to share my thoughts at the holidays.

This first "poem" I wrote back in 1998 -- pre-kids! I will try to share a rhyme each day this week... Enjoy!

A Woman's Version of Christmas

Well, it starts in November

With the holiday sales

And browsing through catalogs

To shop through the mail.

Next comes the decorating

It's time to deck the halls,

And the mantles and the staircases

And every inch of the walls.

Then it's hours of baking

Enough for a crowd

Twelve batches of cookies --

Martha Stewart would be proud.

We sew homemade stockings

And make holiday crafts

We bake breads and make fudge

Just about anything from scratch.

Did I mention the cards?

The hundred plus we send

And the "small" gatherings we host

For family and friends.

We wrap all the presents

Make our own holly wreaths

And in the middle of all that

Prepare the Christmas Day feast.

And as much as we want

To cut back, to start over

We'll do the same thing next year

But start in October.

A Man's Version of Christmas

Hang the lights on the house

Spend an hour at the mall

There's more cookies than usual

And two straight weeks of football.

Glutton for Glitter

My sister and I hit the mall today for some final holiday shopping. No kids, coffees in hand, hours to ourselves. It was bliss.

Before departing the mall, we decided to hit Forever 21. If you have not been to Forever 21, it's like walking into a club, but with the lights up. Booming music, glitz and young girls everywhere. And although I tend to skew a little higher in age than the average customer, I must say I have to at least peek at their accessories. So much fun.

Of course, I couldn't go home empty handed. I'm like a cat when it comes to shiny objects -- especially anything with glitter or sequins. Don't get me wrong. I grew up in the "preppy era" and still worship the fashion gods of J Crew. But all girls need a little touch of sparkle.

I scored the above belt for $2.50. That's not a typo or a sale price. The photo does not do it justice. It is a shimmery bronze and almost exactly like the one you'll find at the aforementioned favorite of mine, J Crew, but for a tenth of the price.

Next up, a sequined tank in very a classic navy and black rugby stripe. This will look so fab under a black blazer and paired with jeans and boots. The price: $7. Yes, it was on sale and for that price I should have bought ten and worn them as pj's, but Colorado's a little chilly this time of year.

So for less than ten bucks, looks like I'm going to have a shiny new year. Merry Christmas to me!

Magazine Junkie

I love to read. In fact, just had book club with the girls last night (we read "South of Broad" by Pat Conroy). Books will always be my first love, but magazines are my constant companions.

I think I subscribe to about 20 magazines. What I don't receive in my mailbox at home I usually read second-hand from someone else, or while getting the hair or nails done. This can be a bit of a problem when you're perusing the shelves at the airport book store for a good distraction and realize you already have read/seen every single issue.

Of course I lean heavily toward fashion and interiors, but I do get magazines that I can actually read, and my dad passes on his copies of The New Yorker to me when he's done.

Just got my copy of W in the mail today. I like W because it is quite different from most fashion mags (larger format, bizarre photography...) but I just LOVED this issue. There was an amazing 20 page spread just on the Spring '10 fashion lines alone. I was like a kid in an eye-candy store. This one is a keeper and will not be making the rounds to female friends, or the recycle bin.

Winter Wonderland

Check back with me in about a month, and I so won't be singing this tune. But currently in Colorado it is frigid (9 degrees F), frosty (it snowed off and on yesterday) and fantastic (more light snow to come). I love it.... right now.

Our Thanksgiving was 70 degrees F and sunny. So not my style. And the sad thing is, I host Easter every year for my large family and it is usually 40-50 degrees F and possibly wet. So right now I am loving this wintery weather for our holiday season. It is picture perfect. We finally got it right! :)

Moving from weather to weddings, as you know by now, I sell upcycled cardigans. Awhile ago I did a post about wearing a cardigan with your wedding gown. I have actually sold some white and cream embellished cardigans that are going to be worn by a bride or someone in the bridal party. I found another fabulous photo to showcase the look:

So how does this all tie together? I actually have a sweater on my Etsy shop named "Winter Wonderland" and it would be the perfect little cover up for the bride, or her party, or even guest. I'd keep it -- I just don't have any weddings on the horizon. Hurry up and grab it if you do...

Flowers in December?

Let me explain. We are experiencing frosty temps and snow in Colorado -- which really is quite lovely for the holiday season. But sometimes you need a little pretty pick-me-up.

This post is dedicated to someone I know who is recovering from knee surgery, and she is also a wonderful gardener. So to lift her spirits a little (and give her something new to look at ;) I wanted to spread a little spring flowers among the holiday holly and mistletoe.

Aaaaah.... now back to snow and winter wonderlands...

These pictures came from my dear friend Mary Jane, whose brother grows amazing flowers up in the Northwest. Everyday he sends a pic to his family -- their daily "flower-gram".

I love this photo. Of course, I did not take it (I'm not the best photographer). This was done by a wonderful photographer Lindsay B. These are my twins Bridget and Teddy (a year ago) and I just love how she captured their joy. It makes me happy and thankful everytime I look at it.

Of course, I have THREE children, so not to slight Will -- the oldest at almost nine years old -- I wanted to include a photo of him too. This is the three of them at the beach in May. This will also be our Christmas card photo too, so you're getting a little sneak peek.

In honor of Thanksgiving and the start of the magical holiday season, I wanted to share what I am most thankful for -- my three wonderful kids. Happy day to you all!

Holiday Sweaters on SALE

It's Thanksgiving week -- the "unofficial" start of the holiday season. Honestly, it gets earlier and earlier every year. Pretty soon Christmas items will be displayed with back-to-school supplies.

Nice Girls Finish Third...

Sadly, this season of Project Runway has come to an end, and now I need to figure out what I'll be doing on Thursday nights. While I must say winner "Meana Irina" did have a great fashion show, I really was rooting for southern sweetheart Carol Hannah. She is a dress girl all the way and her designs are so elegant and charming -- the dress above even has pockets! I'd buy one of her designs any day.

Good news though: the next season of Project Runway starts in less than two months (January 14)! And hallelujah, they're back in NYC -- the fashion capital. No offense LA, but it just wasn't the same, even if there was a West Coast Mood.

Animal Attraction

Because it's the holidays, I decided to warm up the color palette of my aprons a bit. Who doesn't love a little leopard print? Like all my aprons, I make them from recycled sheets. A bit too feline for my taste, but someone enjoyed these in their bedroom at some point. Now ruffled and tiered, they make a sassy fashion statement in the form of a lovely hostess apron. Feeling wild?

Note to Self: More Towels Next Year

So my show over the weekend went really well. The weather was quite festive (snow!) and it really got me revved up for the holidays.

Every year my twin sis tells me: "You need to make more hand towels. They're great hostess gifts." So this year I made more -- what I thought was more than enough. In addition to the appliqued ones I featured a couple of posts ago, I also made these towels. They're recycled vintage linens and table cloths that I embellished with heat transfers.

Sure enough, sold out in about the first half hour. So this time I'm putting it in writing: more towels for 2010 Gifts for Yule show. I'll start scouting recycled linens today!

Second Chance Charm

Before the aprons and sweaters, I was "dressing" inanimate objects -- still do. They're just harder to sell and ship on Etsy ;)

I love to recycle fabrics and items, and give them a "second chance" at charming others. Most of my fabrics are from recycled linens, including the cover on the chair above. I've been selling these lined bushel baskets for a few years now and they are great for storing all your stuff in style. Of course I add a ruffle or pom-pom whenever possible.

Although somewhat "springy" in color (the palette I'm constantly drawn too), these will also be available at my holiday show this weekend.

Scrap Happy

Need a Holiday Hostess Gift?

I wish I was a better (or more patient) photographer. This picture does not do this hostess towel justice. I made these from "recycled" fabric, added the crimson and white pleated trim and appliqued fabric images on the towels. I have bunches for my holiday show this weekend. Weather is looking "wintery" too! Let's hope the snow puts everyone in a holiday shopping mode, and not a "stay at home and hibernate" mode...

A Little Lace

I added some new sweaters to my Etsy shop. Love this one. The lace came from a vintage skirt. The best part was the skirt was lined in satin, so I have tons 'o fabric to make other "embellishments and adornments".

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like..... Halloween?

It's Halloween in Colorado. The snowstorm is long gone, but it left us with 27" of snow -- yes more than two feet. The sun is out and the snow is melting, but rather than the crunch of fall leaves beneath our feet, we have soggy piles of leaves and slush. The kids don't seem to mind, but now my mind is on Christmas...

The "Holidays" Are Here!

I consider myself a pretty good multi-tasker, but I gotta admit my blogging has fallen by the wayside this week. I added 15 new sweaters to my Etsy shop today, and among them are the new "Holiday '09 Collection".

Included are some fun little cardi's that I embellished with the most gorgeous vintage trims. They're all metallic and shimmery and glitzy. These sweaters are great to dress down for everyday, or don one for any number of holiday events. They are certainly one-of-a-kinds and extra special, thanks to the hand-sewn vintage adornments.

Some Like It Hot Pink

I gotta admit, I'm not really a "hot pink" girl. Maybe it's my more fair complexion, but magenta and I don't mix well. However, I was born again when I tried this sweater on. I rescued it when it was just a "plain Jane" cardi. But after some vintage flower appliques and a few vintage buttons, I felt I was channeling Joan from Mad Men (granted, Joan fills out the sweater a little better).

I have realized that as I get older, I've been adding a little more color to my wardrobe. Oh, I'll always be a cream, neutral, black, grey, brown kind of girl, but every once in a while a little color does a girl good.

Alas, I'm not keeping this cardi, but sharing the "fuchsia" with the rest of you. This cardigan, along with several others, are available on my Etsy shop (see right column). And I've been busy working with glitz and glam for my holiday collection. Can't wait to share those soon!

Paris?! Not Exactly...

It was the OTHER "La Ville-Lumiere" (City Of Lights).... Las Vegas!

And yes, this is the "Eiffel Tower" at Paris Hotel. Actually I was poolside when I took this photo. Not a bad place to catch some sun, sip some cocktails and take a dip in the pool.

Sure the real deal would have been magnifique, but this was a nice alternative -- especially for a 1 1/2 hour flight. We saw a fabulous show (Cirque du Soleil's "Love" -- all set to Beatles music), ate some great meals, relaxed by the pool and shopped. Not too shabby, considering it was 20 degrees and snowing back in Denver.

Best of all was the girl time spent with mom and the sista's. Very fun. So much so, we have to do it again. But next time -- the real Paris ;)

Project Runway + Wedding Dresses = Bliss

Project Runway was on tonight (love that show) and the challenge this week was to create a new "going out" look for a divorcee using her original wedding gown. OMG! Project Runway AND wedding dresses?! Heaven.

If it were my challenge, I would have done the above look -- just throw a sweet sweater over it and add a few embellishments. When in doubt, do a cardi! Seriously, it was a fun challenge to watch and makes me want to pull out my old wedding dress and see what I can come up with....

I came across this old frame at my last outdoor market (The French Nest) and knew it had to come home with me (it was a steal too)! Not sure what's going in it yet: corkboard, blackboard, ribbon board, or some amazing picture...

But now I am thoroughly convinced that it's almost impossible for me to buy something brand new. I love things that have had a prior life and a story. And it's kinda funny how second-hand has become so chic. Or maybe it only is in our little "blog" world... Let's keep it a secret ;)

Not So Basic Black

Sometimes black is considered "safe" or "boring". Not these cardi's. They've been embellished with ribbons and flowers and ruffles and even numbers. I just added a few more cardigans to my Etsy shop, with more on the way.

Also coming soon: the Holiday Collection. No, these are not those crazy Christmas sweaters with the reindeer and snowflakes. I've got a special collection of sweaters that will be perfect for all those upcoming holiday events. They are embellished with the most gorgeous and glittery vintage trims. Rocky Mountain High

Went looking for the Fall colors up in the mountains of Colorado this weekend. However, I think we were a little "past peak" in the area we were headed. Nonetheless, the views were still spectacular, even sans colors. The photo above is a shot I got on the way up Berthoud Pass to Winter Park. Ski season will be here before you know it.

This was the view from our balcony. We love the condo we stay in, and this time the new outdoor pool and spa were open. It's kinda fun to swim outdoors when the air temp is in the 40's. The pool was in the high 80's and the spa was toasty. Very relaxing.

We took a side trip to Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash. Heavenly! I highly recommend a stay or even just a day visit if you're in the area. http://www.devilsthumbranch.com/

Next week I'm off to Vegas with mom and the sista's for my older sister's 50th birthday. Two weekends in a row lounging at the pool in October -- not a bad life, eh? ;) I'll have some photos to share of that girls' outing and I'm guessing they'll look a little less tranquil than the ones above. Even though it was in the mid 80's today here in Colorado, it's always sweater weather! Our nights are getting cooler, and our mornings start off chilly, so why not cover up with a classic cardigan? It's a Cardi Party

I went to Catholic School quite a few years, and say what you will about the lovely plaid uni's, sometimes it was great having a uniform. You don't have to think about what you're wearing each morning. It's already been decided for you.

I find that having a "uniform" these days (as a mom, etc...) makes getting dressed in the morning much easier. My fall uniform pretty much consists of jeans, tanks and a cardigan with either ballet flats or boots.

Jeans and tanks are pretty simple, but you can have a lot of fun with cardigans. So in my quest to find "fun" cardigans, I decided to make a few and share them with all of you in Etsy world. I took vintage/thrift cardi's and embellished them with a variety of appliques: beads, ruffles, rosettes, vintage appliques -- creating a unique look for each.

It's Fashion Week in NYC. If only...

But I do get my fix by looking at www.style.com on a daily basis. They cover every single fashion show (most of them, at least) and post photos and reviews of each collection.

Above is a look from Badgley Mischka. It stopped me dead in my tracks. I love this look. I love the mix of tailored and girly. Sure she forgot her top. And sure -- there really is no place that the majority of women would/could wear this to. But I love the concept and I think it could easily translate into a wearable option.

Vogue TV Viewing

I currently have three "must watch" TV shows in my repertoire, and it's funny, they all involve fashion (ok, two definitely do, and one just has amazing clothes).

MAD MEN
I've watched this show from the start, mainly because it takes place in an advertising agency, and my "former life" involved advertising. But I've continued to watch the show because:
a) it's AMAZING -- it really is. You have to tune in to a couple of episodes to really appreciate it.
b) the era and the fashion are just so chic -- or at least they make it look like it was. Mad Men is set in the early 60's in Manhattan and the clothes are just too much. Men in suits (and hats), women in gorgeous dresses and pumps -- all the time! Reminds me of another favorite show of mine: "I Love Lucy".

I know we're in a time where "business casual" is the rule, but I love any excuse -- ANY -- just to dress up and put on some jewels.

PROJECT RUNWAY

PR, to me, is the be-all, end-all of reality competition shows. And it has the awards to prove it. It usually wins the Emmy for best reality show.

The competition is fun, "fierce", and so creative. I know, some of the outfits look kinda crazy, but it's pretty incredible what these folks can come up with.

I love the judges (Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and several "guest" judges -- ranging from actresses to top fashion designers). I looooove Tim Gunn. What a nice guy -- don't you just want to be friends with him?

A new season is currently underway and I never get tired of it. There's always new people, new personalities, new fabrics, new ideas and amazing fashion.

THE RACHEL ZOE PROJECT
Famous celeb fashion stylist Rachel Zoe just started her second season of her reality show, which follows the life of her fast-paced styling business, along with her associates Brad and Taylor, and hubby Rodger.

Sure it seems superficial and dramatic at times, but who cares!? Where else do you get a front row seat to fashion week, the best fashion designers in the world and Red Carpet moments. This show is just eye candy upon eye candy.

On that note, I think the next movie on my list is going to be "The September Issue." It's all about Anna Wintour and Vogue magazine and a behind-the-scenes look at how that machine works. I'll let you know how that one is, but I've got a feeling I'm going to love it....

Fab Finds

Once you've been a participant or shopper at an open-air market, it's really hard to buy at regular retail shops. The majority of my latest purchases (personal, home, gifts...) have been divided among my fellow Etsy artists, my fellow outdoor market vendors -- and, of course -- thrift stores. That fun hobby requires its own separate post!

One of my latest "deals of the day" was this pair of iron wall sconces. The color, the shape, the size -- all perfection. But the best part: the price. Five dollars for the pair! It was one of those "I don't know where I'm going to put them but for that price I have to have them" moments.

Also from the same great vendor at the Sweet William Market last Saturday -- this mirror!

Pefectly patina'd and super heavy duty, it looks like it was made from an old cabinet door. I'm happy to report that all three of these pieces have a found a home -- side by side -- in my front entry hall.

I can see why 5280 Magazine named the Sweet William Market the best place to shop for home accessories. All that for 15 bucks! Vintage charm, one-of-a-kind style, amazing price. You can't buy that at any Pottery Barn.

A Thing for Big Rings

My name is Caroline and I'm a jewelry junkie. There -- I said it. I think I even mentioned it in my bio. Some women have a weakness for bags (not so much), or shoes (kinda, but not rabid) -- but my thing is jewelry.

The good news is -- it doesn't have to be expensive jewelry. In fact, some of my best finds have been under ten bucks. But it does have to be different. And when it comes to rings -- they have to be BIG!

Above is a snapshot of my current collection (minus a few that I thought were big -- but now are really just "medium"). My latest addition is the white baby in the back row center. It was a vintage earring, made into a ring. Found it on Etsy for $20 and had to have it. As Rachel Zoe would say: "I die!"

Did I mention I love vintage jewelry? But I don't discriminate. In fact, three out of the seven rings above are from either H&M or JCrew. I'll let you try and figure out which is which.

Domestic Goddess: Back To The Books

My third grader started school today. The first day of school is kind of like New Year's for me. You get this desire to clean out, start new, make resolutions, get back on a schedule...

As part of my back-to-school "cleanse", I've decided I've got to start hitting the books more. I read at least one book a month for my book club, but it's time to add some "in-betweeners". When I need a good read, I always turn to my friend Lisa. Lisa and I bonded over books. She married a dear friend of ours and I loved her right away when I saw she had a copy of "Atonement" (pre-movie of course) and ranked it as one of her favorites!

Ruffles Are All The Rage!

Probably one of my favorite fashion trends these days is the rebirth of the ruffle. Thank you J Crew. I'm not sure they can take all the credit, but J Crew does a pretty darn good job of ruffling anything they can get their hands on.

And it's not prissy ruffles. It's ruffles you pair with a t-shirt and broken in jeans. That's why I love these aprons. You can still be a bit of a "ruffle-phobe", but with an apron, there's little commitment. Pop one on over your jeans and t-shirt, and you are ready for any soiree! Or just wear one to bake a pie. You can't help but feel special.

New Girl on the Block -- Sophia

This apron really did come from the drapes. It's made from a very soft and pretty Shabby Chic curtain panel. Most of my aprons are made from sheets, but I couldn't let this fabric pass me by. Sophia has 4 layers of ruffles and reminds me of a wedding cake.

I've realized that making clothing from the curtains is really quite commonplace on the silver screen. Of course there's the famous "Gone With The Wind" drapery dress. And who could forget resourceful Maria in "The Sound of Music". The Von Trapp children running all over Salzburg in their play clothes made from curtain panels!

And now another movie has been brought to my attention. In "Enchanted," Amy Adams makes a few dresses out of Patrick Dempsey's drapes. She even turns it into a business at the end of the movie. My daughter loves this "princess" movie -- which is also very adult-worthy. Amy Adams is perfection as Princess Giselle, and with other great castmembers like Mc Dreamy, Susan Sarandon and James Marsden, this movie really is a must-see family film.

Meet Penelope

So I had my first Etsy purchase yesterday! Yea! It's nice to get one under your belt. Granted I do this every couple of weeks at my "markets", but this is my first "cyber sale".

I have been having a blast shopping for "new inspiration". I never realized how many fabulous colors and patterns sheets can come in. My personal sheets are a boring (but very comfy and organic) white. Take a look at the vintage sheet it took to make "Penelope" (see pic above).

SIDE NOTE: in an effort to cut back on confusion, I've decided to name all my aprons. It's also a great opportunity to look at the Baby Name Book again, knowing I will not be naming any more children.

This vintage sheet is loads of fun and the colors are indescribable. The combination really makes it pop. You can also meet "Margaret" by clicking on my Etsy shop (in right margin). She was born out of a vintage Ralph Lauren sheet. Five luscious layers of ruffles -- very proper.

French Nest this Saturday in Fort Collins

It's always good to try new things. Last month I tried a new outdoor market in Fort Collins and loved it. So much so, I'll be back again for August.

Domestic Goddess: Hostess with the Mostest

Who doesn't love a party (except the occasional "party pooper")? There's something heartwarming about being invited to someone's home (or elsewhere) to enjoy food, cocktails, company, conversation and camaraderie.

And hosting a party is a great way to showcase your place, your style and your creativity. I have a friend who is a master at hosting gatherings in her lovely home. Joanne has a natural knack for setting up the most welcoming settings -- especially for her female friends. Her home is classic and cozy, and ideal for entertaining. And her special attention to details can make any get-together magical and memorable.

Here are some photos of a recent Birthday Brunch Joanne hosted for her good friend Dawn. It was sweet, simple and oh-so special:

When you enter Joanne's house, you immediately get a cozy, beachy vibe -- although we reside in a landlocked, mountainous state. Frequent trips to both coasts help her get her fill of the ocean and find her special treasures.

Her living room is perfect for our girl nights of cocktails and conversation. We just sink into the comfy sofas and never want to leave that room.

Here is where we gathered for pre-brunch coffee, tea and mimosas....

Leave it to Joanne to move the dining room outside! She is one of those fortunate ones who has that "perfect" farm table for outdoor entertaining.

And finally -- time to eat. Joanne (the quintessential hostess) is at the head of the table on the left and Dawn (Birthday Girl) is at the other head of the table on your right (I took the photo).

Hello Etsy!

I'm finally on Etsy! It wasn't that hard (as you "already on Etsy" people know). The hard part for me is finding the time, and taking the photos. I'm not the best photographer and my photog (twin sis Sue) just went out of town for 2 weeks. But I couldn't delay anymore, so I snapped a few photos and here I am.

I have only listed my newest creations: the Scarlett Apron. The name's inspiration comes from Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind". Remember the infamous "curtain dress"? Julie Andrews did the same thing for children's wear in "Sound of Music". Use what you have. While those two innovative ladies used curtains for their apparel, I've used vintage bed linens (mostly sheets, and some duvet covers).

The result: luscious, soft and flirty tiered ruffled aprons that wash well, wear well, and make a statement all their own. The above apron is perfect for the bride who wants to bake her own wedding cake and get married -- all on the same day. Or if you're already married, just wear it to make dinner. Gotta be good lookin' while you're cookin'.

Domestic Goddess: La Dolce Vita

A couple of posts ago I asked some friends what is at the top of their list for desired destinations. I believe the beautiful Mediterranean country of Italy received six votes! Make that seven. Top of my bucket list: 1. Visit Italy. 2. Learn a second language.

I have always wanted to speak a second language. I lived in Canada for my first two years of high school, and although Ontario is an English-speaking province, French was a required subject for all. The only problem: I was waaaaay too far behind to even attempt French with my fellow grade-niners. So I took Latin instead. Great language. Dead language, but great for figuring out some of those difficult Trivial Pursuit questions.

I have a dear friend, Mary Rose, who will be going to Italy in a couple of weeks. This is not just another vacation. This is a trip back home to family. Both of MR's parents hail from Palermo, Sicily, and while MR was born in Chicago, she did not speak English until she attended Kindergarten. I asked MR what a couple of key words or phases one should know in Italian. In her words:

Book Report

I've been in the same Book Club for 8 years now. Some members have come and gone. There are four original members still left (Amy, Wendy, Lisa, and me) and seven that have joined and stayed throughout these years (Sue, Lisa B., Kirsten, Sandi, Brooke, Deb and Cheli -- who despite having moved to Houston, still joins us on occasion for Book Club, and always reads along in Texas).

Amy started it all back in the summer of '01. It's amazing to look back and see how many things we've all experienced throughout these eight years: babies, divorces, moves and home renovations, marital strife, depression, vacations, law suits, new jobs... Along with the countless day-to-day issues: kids, husbands, diets and exercise, school, kids' sports and extracurriculars, growing older, religion, politics... And of course the laughter over things the kids said, what husbands did, too many cocktails at a party, old memories, embarrasing stories, and gossip -- either personal or Hollywood. Oftentimes our book club discussed the most recent issue of People Magazine more than the actual book.

Above is our pick for our 71st book club. In the beginning we were by-the-book monthly Book Club readers. Schedules get busier and getting 11 moms together can be tough. So now we've relaxed things a little and meet anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. Someone always hosts at their house and what started as a few snacks (and no alcohol!) is now full-blown dinner and variety of adult beverages -- including the signature wine cooler.

Full attendance can be rare, but the majority of us usually make it. Some come late (after their kids' sporting event, or even their own tennis match) and some miss some months because of vacations, or other goings on. I'm pretty much a regular, as I soooo look forward to a night out of great food and drink, fun conversation and sweet friends.

We just discussed "Sarah's Key" by Tatiana De Rosnay this past Sunday night -- and Cheli was actually in town for her 40th birthday! I asked the girls what their favorite read was over these past eight years. Of course everyone's tastes differ, but there were a few classics -- that when mentioned -- got the "Oh, that WAS a great book! I liked that one too!" So in no particular order, here is a list of our favorites that we read, shared and enjoyed:

Domestic Goddess: Paper Princess

My older sister Linda is the original "crafter" in our family. She can do anything: sew, paint, draw -- but her favorite medium these days is paper. It's amazing what she can do with paper: tags, bags, wrap, scrap... One of my favorite creations is her journals (above).

As someone who likes to write -- and NEEDS to write -- a pretty journal makes it an even more inviting daily event. Her journals are embellished in the most beautiful papers, and she covers all covers: front, back and insides. Sometimes they seem almost too pretty to write in. I have yet to break this one in. But once I get going, they really make journalling a joy.

And even if you're not a "Dear Diary" kind of gal, her journals are perfect for list-making, doodling -- even homework! Look for Linda's lovely journals alongside my creations at my indoor shows (Gifts for Yule and Spring Fling). Or let me know if you would like one sooner. She's more than happy to do custom orders.

Etsy, Ebay and Vintage Aprons

I love Etsy. It's like going to a 24-hour a day artisan fair, and shopping from thousands of creative artists for one-of-a-kind items you can't find in just any 'ol store. I hope to soon have my creations up on Etsy for anyone and everyone to purchase. :) I'll keep you posted...

But I must confess, before there was Etsy, there was Ebay. Ebay was my first love, and I still remain loyal to Ebay. Ebay, much like Etsy, is a 24-hour shopping haven. But it's more like going to a huge garage sale and treasure hunting. It's where the Etsy sellers go to get some of their goods -- their supplies.

The auction aspect of Ebay really makes it exciting too: putting things on your watch list, seeing what other kind of bids are being placed, and then swooping in at the last minute to snag your prized possession at your perfect price.

I also enjoy buying things by the "lot". If you've ever won an auction on Ebay for a "lot" of something, getting the package in the mail is like Christmas morning. You are just so excited to see what's in the box.

My most recent Ebay treasure was a "lot of vintage aprons". Some sellers put several photos in their ad, displaying every detail of their items, and sharing every flaw and wrinkle. Not this listing. See photo below. That's all I had to go on.

I had to rely on my initial gut instinct that I was getting a good deal. And without revealing the final price -- still in single digits -- I have to say that I did alright. Out of the 15 aprons, five were beyond repair. I "rehabilitated" the remaining ten with some ric rac, fringe, flower buttons and pom poms. What was once an indistinguishable pile, is now ten adorable child's aprons (see photos at top of post). Side note: people must have been a lot smaller in the "olden days", because these aprons are pretty tiny.

You don't always get so lucky with Ebay, but you have to know your limits and what you're willing to work with. And if you're still reluctant to take a chance on the riskier Ebay, you can always go to Etsy and buy the finished "rehabilitated vintage apron" for only five dollars each. I'll let you know as soon as I have the listing up. If you really want and need one now -- let me know! I'll be happy to get one to you.

French Nest Market

My last post was all about far off and exotic places. Fort Collins, Colorado is a little like that for me this weekend. I am breaking away from routine and doing a new outdoor market.

The French Nest Open-Air Market (see above) is where I will be all day Saturday (tomorrow), July 11th. I've been entrenched in the Denver market for a couple of years now and have been wanting to add a new local destination for selling my wares.

Fort Collins is about an hour north (and I live on the North end of the Denver Metro area), so it will be a bit of a drive, but I'm so looking forward to this market. Fort Collins is a great city and is often ranked in the "Top 10 Places to Live in America".

Wish me luck at The French Nest Open-Air Market, and I'll let you know how it goes! And of course I'll be back in my usual spot at The Sweet William Market at Stapleton in two weeks.

Group Project -- Desired Destinations

For some, summer means vacation. I tend to take my vacation at the end of April/early May -- when I really need it. "Spring" is a misnomer in Colorado. We can have snow up until June. So by the time Easter is over, Florida is looking pretty good. And come summer, the mountain towns (Vail, Aspen) of Colorado are a great place to go.

I polled some friends to find out the places they have at the top of their list to visit -- be it a maiden voyage, or a return trip. Some were quick and to the point. Others expanded on their reasons for their desired visit. And for others: the means of transportation was most important. One thing's for sure: Italy is a very popular place. We start off our list with six votes for the Mediterranean country.

I have to say hands down, there is absolutely no other place like being on the Chiron. It doesn't matter where it is...usually in Newport, Cabo, or Puerta Vallarta. It is pure Heaven, and I'm so in love with that boat! It's waking up on the ocean & being surrounded by nature. It's being in awe of the beauty & luxury of the boat, and realizing I'm on it and sharing it with my family or friends. It's sitting on the couch looking out and seeing Orca whales, dolphins, squid, whale sharks....you name it. Of course, then there is always the guys who are cooking for you, cleaning up after you, and making sure your every need is met.

We are STILL trying to convince Wendy to do a neighborhood "girls" trip on the Chiron.

4th of July

The Fourth of July is such a festive and important holiday in the States. For some it marks the "start of summer", for others it makes us realize how fast summer is slipping by, and that September is not so far away.

I'm using this weekend to cherish the last weeks of lazy mornings, later nights, trips to the pool, the smell of sunscreen, grilled dinners outdoors, icy cold Coronas with lime, sandals, s'mores, ponytails, popsicles, thunderstorms and all the things that seem summer. Enjoy your holiday!

Just Hanging Around...

They say there's no such thing as an "original" idea anymore -- that someone else has come up with it already -- you might just have a different version of it.

Same could be said for these lovely little vases/votives. Being new to bloggerville, I got sucked into the "labyrinth" of looking at other blogs. You know the drill... you click onto one, look at one their favorites, click onto that one, and so the cycle goes.

That being said I saw this adorable idea on a blog, including a link to further instructions on how to make them. I just can't remember which one now.

But I'll tell you "my version":

Take your basic Mason jar (small jam size works best)
Wrap wire around rim and create a handle (I used picture hanging wire)
Swaddle the jar with a vintage handkerchief. These came from my grandmother-in-law and I've been trying to figure out what I could use them for -- voila!
Secure hankie with rubber band
Tie a beautiful ribbon around rubber band to mask it.
Fill with water and your favorite flowers OR a small votive candle and hang!

I was so excited to be able to recycle the handkerchiefs and put them to a good re-use. I will have these vases/votives "hanging around" at my next show, and they can be yours for only eight dollars each. Put a little pretty in your life!

The best place to shop for home accessories in Denver...

So, a couple of posts ago I mentioned that I would be a vendor at the Sweet William Market June 27th. Well, on the eve of market day, I was sooooo pleased to discover that the Sweet William Market was listed as one of the many "reasons to love Denver" by 5280 Magazine. The category specifically: Editor's Choice for Home Accessories Shopping. That gave me an extra thrill, considering I'm all about home accessories.

Domestic Goddess: Beauty Basics

Denver is mile above sea level. As a result, our air is arid. Arid extra dry. We Colorado girls really have to take care of our skin. And while humidity can be uncomfortable at times, there's something to be said about "dewy" skin. "Dewy" only happens in a bottle here...

Above are some of my favorite "beauty in a bottle" (or tube) products. You can find all of these at your local Target, drug store, or health food store.

I can't live without:

Chapstick Overnight: I'm still looking for an "ultimate" daytime lip balm. Must have SPF, a slight tint, yet not be sticky. Any suggestions??? Please let me know!

Organics Desert Essence hand and body lotion in Vanilla Chai: smells so yummy you want to drink it up.

Aquaphor: so much better than Vaseline. Slap this stuff on with a pair of socks before bed and you'll wake up with the smoothest, softest feet.

Dove Energy Glow: we all know by now the dangers of too much sun. But ya gotta love a tan. Even just a glow. I love this product because it doesn't smell "self-tannerish" -- actually has a hint of citrus to it, and it creates a very subtle glow.

St Ives Apricot Facial Scrub: It's inexpensive but totally does the trick. I realize now how important exfoliation is. Comes only second to sunscreen in my book.

Olay Beauty Lotion: my mom has used this stuff for years, and she looks great. Enough convincing for me. And of course mine includes an SPF.

Finally, not pictured, my own personal "sugar scrub". I ran out of my "name brand" body sugar scrub one day, and decided to make my own. I use the organic sugar from the grocery store, canola oil and lavender essential oil for a slight scent. Exfoliates, softens and smells great. And it's cheap!

But sometimes you need a little more help than "home care". Or maybe just a little pampering. My dear friend Kelly Olmsted is the owner of Face Logic Spa (http://www.facelogicspa.com/). This place is your one-stop spa for all the "don't try this at home" things: facials, microdermabrasion, masks, peels, waxing... And they are so reasonable. Under $50 for an awesome facial. Give them a try! I have been known to doze off during the massage part -- so relaxing and such a treat!

On that note I must say that they call it "beauty sleep" for a reason. Too many nights of burning the midnight oil, and no magic potion is going to fix that... Good night! :)

Group Project: The $5 Question

As I mentioned in an earlier post, sometimes I'll shine the spotlight on one goddess. Other times I'll need to summon the masses...

For this Group Project, I asked my friends the question:
"If you had a $5 bill, how would you spend it?"

The results are in! The thing I love about us girls is that we can covet the most exquisite, luxurious items in life, but when it gets down to it, we are pretty easy to please.

One thing is for sure: we ladies love our Starbucks. All different kinds and sizes. Too many to mention, but here's a few orders:

"Venti decaf peppermint mocha"

"Grande decaf mocha, non-fat, no whip, with two pumps"

"Venti mocha frappucino, while I sit and read a book"

For others, sustenance was the little treat that got us through the day:

Domestic Goddess: Garden Girl

I wish I had a green thumb. I have a knack for fabric, but when it comes to growing things, I leave it to the produce department at Sprouts Market.

My sweet friend Lisa Payne is not only a successful business woman(http://www.guntherdouglas.com/), and a mom to adorable 2 year old Brady, but she is also a great gardener and cook. While hanging out in her beautiful backyard the other night (check out the view!) I was green with envy over her garden.

The variety is vast and the pickins are good:

Red, yellow and orange bell peppers

Ancho peppers

Jalapeno peppers

Acorn and butternut squash

Yellow squash

Zucchini squash

All kinds of tomatoes: big red, cherry, tomatillo

Cucumber

Strawberries

Herbs: tarragon, rosemary, sage, basil, oregano, mint

While I'm definitely inviting myself back at the end of the summer for the "cornucopia harvest feast", I did enjoy a fresh, simple and delicious asparagus dish Lisa had prepared that night. It's perfect as a summer side:

Jumbo Asparagus with Meyer Lemon Dressing
20 spears jumbo asparagus (about 1 lb) peeled
Coarse sea salt
Freshly ground pepper
Meyer lemon dressing (recipe below)

In a pot of boiling, heavily salted water, cook the asparagus about 4 minutes. Drain well. Shock in a bowl of ice water until cool, then drain well. If serving warm, toss with about 1/3 cup of the dressing. season with salt and pepper.

Meyer Lemon Dressing
Juice and zest of 3 Meyer lemons
1 teaspoon mustard
1 tablespoon egg yolk (discard the rest)
1 small shallot, minced
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 cups canola oil

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the juice and zest, mustard, egg yolk, shallot, and salt and pepper. Whisk in the canola oil in a slow stream to emulsify. Note: this recipe will make a little extra dressing.

The Tablecloth Trick

You've seen them in the magazines. Those idyllic outdoor parties with the exquisitely set rustic farm table, comfortably seating a dinner party of 12 or more.

Most of us scramble and pull a couple utility tables out of the basement, or ask to borrow someone's card table when the crowd gets bigger than six, or extra space is needed for a bar.

And those tables do the trick -- they're just ugly. Even if you toss a tablecloth or sheet over them, they never look like that idyllic party in the magazines. Too long on one side, too short on another. And God forbid it's a windy day...

Enter the fitted tablecloth. And I'm not talking the plastic/elastic kind. These are full-on fabric with fine details, like a sweet ruffle trim. Just ready to transform your "ugly" table.

Destination Goddess: Boulder Bound

Editor's Note: It's June 17th and I posted the following blog a little over a week ago. Just finished reading an article in the July/August edition of National Geographic Traveler, p. 42. The cover headline is "How Perfect is Boulder?" and the article goes on to mention seven must-do's. Among them: Eat at The Kitchen and Frasca, visit the Dushanbe Tea House, and shop Boulder Book Store. I think Katie was "spot-on"! :)

I had the pleasure of living in Boulder, Colorado for four years while attending "higher education". My budget back then mainly supported dorm cafeteria fare, the drink of choice was free keg beer, and shopping usually meant a trip to the CU Bookstore each semester.

Things have changed in 20 years. My budget is a bit bigger, and Boulder -- while its "essence" remains the same, thankfully -- has changed some of the places we flock to now. I enlisted my niece Katie as my "destination goddess" for this post. Katie works and lives in Boulder with her fiancee Jason, and there was no better pair for me to turn to when creating this "insider's guide" to Boulder. Everything from coffee to cocktails to cupcakes. Take a look:

COCKTAILS ANYONE?

Boulder has some great places for "al fresco" dining and drinks. A few of Katie's faves:

West End Tavern at 926 Pearl: this old favorite has a beautiful view from its rooftop terrace

Centro Latin Kitchen at 950 Pearl: the perfect place for a mojito and a meal

"GREEN" GRUB
Boulder is notorious for its environmental conscience. It is home to so many natural food stores, farmers' markets and organic dining establishments.

Or try Sunflower at 1701 Pearl for fabulous lunch, brunch and dinner -- all organic

And one cannot talk about the Boulder dining scene without mentioning Frasca. Located at 1738 Pearl, Frasca is tough to get into, but soooo worth it. Book your reservations now. It is a dining "experience".

SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT?

The Dushanbe Tea House at 1770 13th Street is a gift from Boulder's sister city in Tajikistan. It is the only building of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. They boast a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as traditional afternoon tea.

SWEET TOOTH?

Got a late night craving for cookies, cupcakes, ice cream and other confections? Try Boulder Baked at 1911 Broadway. They're open until 1 am. -- 2 am. on the weekends!

Or if you prefer your pastries first thing in the morning, Tee and Cakes, located at 1932 14th Street caters to the early crowd.

RETAIL THERAPY

Need to walk off some of that food and drink? A little shopping might do the trick. Two of Katie's favorite stores in Boulder are Bliss, located at 1643 Pearl, and Boulder Book Store, located at 1107 Pearl. Bliss is the perfect place to browse and buy that special gift for someone -- or yourself. Or if you're in the mood for some reading, Boulder Book Store is Boulder's largest independent bookstore.

Burlap: it isn't just for potato sack races anymore...

It all started with a few pillows I made from coffee sacks last summer. The lovely Kim Kouba zeroed in on them at SWM and said "you must make more"... And why not -- two things I love, pillows and coffee.

But... I wanted more. Nothing against South America and Brazil... but I just have a "thing" for all things French (and British and vintage -- you get the idea). The coffee sack pillows may come back, but in the meantime, enjoy these beauties.

Most of the time the images are silk-screened on the burlap pillows. I decided to take another approach and went with heat transfer paper. The result was actually a happy accident. Each image is different from the next (darker in some areas, lighter in others), actually creating a really cool "vintage" look.

I use actual burlap on some pillows, and then "burlap-like" fabrics for others. Most of them are usually backed with a complementary fabric and piped in something equally cool. Group Project: Top Tunes -- Workout

Sometimes this blog will feature the "spotlight goddess". Other times I'll need to call on the masses. I like to call these "Group Projects".

For our first Group Project, I surveyed some of my Workout Goddess friends who are hardcore when it comes to a fitness routine. Their assignment: to give me the top three songs on their ipods when it comes to working up a sweat.

Most had a hard time stopping at three. So scan the list, see if you have any of the same favorites, or if there are some new tunes you want to try during your next trip to the gym or the trails...

My current top 3:

1. "Life in Technicolor II" by Coldplay

3. "Jai Ho" from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack

Domestic Goddess of Physical Fitness

My "little" sister Mary is 6'1". She's a tennis player, basketball player, runner, swimmer, cyclist, and golfer. She masters every sport she tries. She's coached basketball and tennis at all levels. She's a working referee. She's completed marathons, triathlons, and is an Ironman (though I prefer to say "Ironwoman"). I'm still not sure how we are related.

But I'm glad we are. Because when I feel like I need to start a new workout, or kick my current workout up a notch, I know where to turn. I asked Mary to share her "five things to consider" when starting your own personal workout journey:

1. Figure out WHY you want to workout:

stress relief

to be healthy

weight loss

social reasons/networking

time alone

to look good (of course this is an added bonus!)

or some other reason you may have

2. Figure out WHAT you like to do:

Do you like the gym atmosphere?

Do you like the camaraderie of group classes (spin, yoga, pilates, etc...)?

Would you like to have a trainer tell you what to do (there are affordable options)

Do you like the feeling of pumping iron (free weights and machines)?

Do you like the freedom of being outdoors, whether it's a good walk, hike, run or bike ride?

Also figure out if you like to fly solo or work out with others. Sometimes we're fortunate enough to have a friend to work out with, but other times it's nice to enjoy the solitude. An added bonus to having a workout buddy is there is always that "accountability factor" -- when someone is counting on you.

3. Figure out what fits your SCHEDULE:

Are mornings your best time, or can you squeeze something in at lunch?

Always schedule your workout just as you would an appointment -- pencil 'em in. It will keep you disciplined and focused.

As your workout becomes part of your daily routine, you will not want to skip it.

4. Set some GOALS for yourself:

Make some short-term goals and some long-term goals. They can be as simple as "Workout 4-5 times this week and drink 8 glasses of water daily"; or "Run my first 5K in 3 months"; or "Tackle that triathlon I've been dreaming about for a few years."

Goals are extremely personal, so make them about YOU and what YOU want to accomplish.

Setting goals keeps us on track and gives us little victories along the way.

More importantly, there's nothing wrong with adjusting our goals along the way -- nothing is set in stone.

5. Make it FUN:

Like everything else in our lives if we don't enjoy what we're doing, we won't continue doing it

If you get in a rut (and we all do) mix it up and change things around

Laugh and always have FUN!

You'll be amazed at what you're capable of!

One thing that always makes my workout routine fun is MUSIC. My next post will list the top tunes for workouts from a sample of my Workout Goddess friends...

And for more proof that I must be adopted, my twin sister finished 10th out of 400-something 41 year old women in this year's Bolder Boulder. I wished her luck while I slept in late that morning...

A Case for Pillows

I am a pillow freak.

The photo to the left is me in ABC Carpet and Home in New York City. My sister and I ducked in there on a wet, chilly day last May and I was immediately transported to pillow paradise. My love for pillows can be summed up simply:

(Side bar: if you have not been to ABC Carpet and Home, put it on your list for your next time in NYC. Ranks right up there with the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building for me. I'm just not sure why they call it ABC Carpet and Home. I would call it Carpet and Home Heaven.)

They're a quick and inexpensive way to change the look of a room.
They're comfy! I use feather/down inserts for most of my pillows.
You can use them anywhere -- I put them on all my outdoor furniture (use poly inserts for outdoors).
Pillows make a space seem more welcoming and cozy.

The photo at the top shows some caroline joy pillows that I featured at the Sweet William Market on May 30th. I tried a new "vintage" look with words (bonjour, bella) and graphics (crowns, birds, etc...). I also like to add a complementary fabric and piping to the opposite side. Domestic Goddess Debut

My first "domestic goddess" contribution, naturally, had to be from my ultimate domestic goddess -- my mom Mary. Mother of five, grandmother of 17, and in her own words, "the fact that I'm 73 years old does not mean I feel 73." Nor does she look it!

I feel fortunate that I can regularly turn to a person with such spot-on instinct, an amazing ability to clarify and simplify things, and someone who's "been there, done that" and is always willing to listen.

Here are a few of her observations over the years. If she could, she would pour you a "nice cup of tea" at the kitchen table right now.

Take your time getting older. Don't rush to get it all done at once, and you will enjoy different experiences.

Keep your sense of humor in tact and don't sweat the small stuff. Everything is usually just a 10-day wonder.

Take pride in whatever you do -- whether it's raising a family, showing up to a job everyday, or even just ironing a shirt -- put your best effort into it.

Tell the truth. It's so much easier in the end. You don't have to remember what you said, and really, less people get hurt.

Life is funny -- you can change on the outside, but many of your feelings, thoughts, emotions and values stay the same on the inside.

Lately I can completely relate to number five. I'm 41 and can no longer do a cartwheel, manuever a skateboard, or ride a rollercoaster without getting sick... but I still feel like the same 14 year old girl who loved fashion magazines, the beach at any time of the year, and ice cream at any time of the day.

The purpose of this blog is two-fold. It was the eventual next stop for caroline joy, my business where I create and sell fabric home furnishings, accessories and gifts. A website is just around the corner, but I felt a little more comfortable getting my feet wet in blogville.

So get ready for some shameless self-promotion, information on my upcoming shows, photos of my wares, and ideas you can use in your own home.

But more importantly, I wanted to use this blog as a forum for my fellow "domestic goddesses". For anyone who has been to one of my shows or bought my work, you know I cater to women and try to celebrate the domestic goddess in all of us gals.

We have a lot of insight to offer, and we don't need to be celebrities to be heard. Don't get me wrong! I'm an annual People magazine subscriber, gush over the gowns at all the awards shows, and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the "Real Housewives" reality series. But is it really necessary for someone to have 15 minutes (or more) of fame to dole out advice?

I have a bunch of girlfriends (plus a mom and three sisters!) who have special areas of expertise, boundless opinions, and hands-on experience that they would love to share. I will regularly share their tips, tidbits, advice and points-of-view on all kinds of topics, so we all can grow and learn as domestic goddesses.

So check back with caroline joy home regularly to see my new caroline joy creations. Share it with your friends. More importantly, come back and gather some "sage wisdom" from a great collection of women, so you can create a serene home and life for yourself.
